Guide to selecting a great menu

Planning catering for a conference or event is extremely important. Here are some helpful tips to consider when planning your menu:

Understand your guest preferences

  • Health conscious attendees, they may prefer more lean meat and low GI food options.
  • Older groups of attendees may prefer a milder menu.
  • Younger or middle-aged attendees
  • Understand if there are any special dietary requirements – Vegetarian, Gluten free etc.

Provide menu choices

  • Offer at least two choices of entrees and desserts plus a cheese board option. Offer three choices of mains.
  • Serve all condiments on the side.

Understand the venue facilities

  • Do they have an in-house caterer or do you need to outsource catering?
  • What kitchen facilities are available for outside caterers?
  • Will the venue charge a fee if you choose to hire an external caterer?

Get creative

  • Have your guests cook their own gourmet lunch with the guidance of a chef. This is great for team building.
  • Think about different areas you could hold your breaks in the venue – Is there an outside area you could set up a summer high tea for afternoon tea? If you are holding an all-day conference this will break up the day and refresh the delegates for the final session.
  • Explore different themed break menu options. Is there a summer afternoon tea option with 'make your own ice cream sundaes' or fruit kebabs and smoothies?
